Do you want to stop losing contacts because you can’t meet their communication preferences?
With the GoHighLevel DND (Do Not Disturb) feature, you can keep their details without annoying them.
This tool lets you control how you contact each lead so you can respect their choices and comply with marketing laws.
Let’s discuss this helpful feature and learn how to automate and manually enable or disable it.
Table of Contents
What Is GoHighLevel DND?
GoHighLevel DND allows you to opt your lead out of all or specific messaging channels. You can activate it manually, through a workflow, or automatically (I’ll discuss this part soon.)
Instead of removing them from your list and losing valuable contact information, you can simply adjust their communication preferences.
For example, some of your leads might want to avoid unwanted messages on their email but are open to receiving SMS updates. With GoHighLevel DND, you can disable emails while keeping the SMS side active.
This feature works across multiple channels inside the platform. That includes:
- SMS and Calls (Inbound and Outbound)
- Emails
- Voice mails
- Integrated platforms like WhatsApp, FB Messenger, and Google My Business (GMB)
How Does Auto-Enable DND Work on Emails?
As I mentioned, GoHighLevel can automatically activate DND for emails under certain conditions.
- When your email bounces or the lead unsubscribes.
- When your email is marked as spam.
How Does Auto-Enable DND Work on SMS?
The platform can also auto-enable DND for SMS based on these criteria.
- If the recipient sends an opt-out keyword such as STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, or CANCEL
- If GoHighLevel detects these certain error codes from Twilio.
Response Code | Description | Action (Enabled) |
30003 | Lead is out of service or unreachable | Temporary DND |
30004 | Message blocked | Permanent DND |
30005 | Inactive user or number isn’t used | Temporary DND |
Why Use GoHighLevel DND For a Contact?
GoHighLevel DND has several benefits that can help your business and relationships with leads.
- Stay Legal. It lets you easily comply with rules like TCPA and the CAN-SPAM Act to avoid fines.
- Happier Leads. You can show your leads that you listen to their preferences. This can help build trust and make them like you more.
- Fewer Spam Flags. Your messages are less likely to be counted as spam if you respect their choices.
- Better Engagement. The DND function lets you stick with the channels your leads prefer so they’re more likely to respond.
How Can You Manually Enable or Disable DND for Each Contact?
To activate the DND function manually, pick a sub-account inside your GoHighLevel agency dashboard and click the “Contacts” tab.
Then, select one from your contact list.
Scroll down to the DND settings of the contact record.
Here, you can do either of the following:
- Click “DND all channels” if you don’t want to contact or send them messages in any way.
- Choose specific communication channels to disable.
Once you apply these changes, GoHighLevel will follow it for future communications.
If you want to re-enable communication channels, return to the same section and remove the “X” from the channels you previously selected.
All the contact DND statuses will reflect inside the conversation area.
How Can You Automate DND Feature for Your Email Campaigns?
Providing an unsubscribe link for your leads to click is necessary to avoid legal penalties. Here’s how to create a trigger link and set up a workflow around it.
Inside your sub-account dashboard, go to the “Sites” tab and click “Funnels.” Create a landing page for the trigger link by selecting “+New Funnel.”
Click +New Step, name your page, and type in the path. Once done, select “Create Funnel Step.”
Design a landing page that confirms the contact has unsubscribed. This page will appear once someone clicks the “Unsubscribe” link. Click “Save” then “Publish.”
Copy the URL of the unsubscribe page from the funnel step. Then, go to the “Marketing” tab and select “Trigger Links.” Click the “+Add Link.”
Name the link, and paste the URL you copied. Don’t forget to save.
Click the “Emails” tab, then open the email campaign or create a new one.
Add the unsubscribe link to the footer. Highlight the text where you want to add the link, then click the hyperlink icon.
Select the tag icon and choose your trigger link from the dropdown. Save the changes.

Add your promotional SMS message by creating an action “Send SMS.”
